The abbey half is the same as any good half day. The afternoon is where the fare goes, and where these days differ from each other.
Montserrat sits within an hour of three wine countries: the Penedès for cava, the Bages for reds, and the estate at Oller del Mas, a working winery inside a tenth-century castle. Nobody invented this combination to fill an afternoon.
Reaching a Catalan winery without a car is awkward and reaching two places in a day is worse. One vehicle, one guide and one booking removes the whole problem, which is most of why these days sell.
The cellar visits are at working wineries rather than tasting rooms: a castle with vines around it, a family house with a train running through its cellars, a farmhouse where the meal is cooked on site.

Read the second row twice. A wine day does not give you more of Montserrat; it gives you something else afterwards. If the mountain is the point, a half-day Montserrat tour gives you the same hours at the abbey and your afternoon back.

Booking window. Three to five days ahead from April to October; the small-group days cap at eight or fifteen and go first. A day or two is enough in winter.
Age. Several wine days set their adult band at eighteen or nineteen, higher than the monastery-only departures. Check before booking for a family.
Diet. One operator adapts for vegetarians, pescatarians, gluten-free and dairy-free and says plainly it is not recommended for vegans; another accommodates restrictions without notice. Pick the one that names yours.

If you are travelling with children. A long cellar visit and a three-course lunch is a difficult afternoon for anybody under about twelve, and several of these days set a higher minimum age.
If you only want the wine. Barcelona has cava days that skip the mountain entirely, and they will be shorter and cheaper than anything here.
