The ridge and the abbey beneath it, the painted nave, the gilded canopy over
the Virgin, the railways that climb the valley, and the wine country the longer days reach. Every

Montserrat photographs badly from close up and unforgettably from a distance. The shape that
carries it is the skyline. Rounded towers of conglomerate stand shoulder to shoulder, and the
visitor service describes the rock as pebbles bound in a natural cement of sand and clay, worked
by wind and rain into needles.
Inside, the basilica is darker and more painted than the pale stone outside suggests. La
Moreneta sits high above the altar under gilt and mosaic. Down in the valley the yellow cabin of
the Aeri de Montserrat crosses on its wire, and the rack railway grinds up the far side.
Captions say what is in the frame and stop. Montserrat is named only where the ridge, the
basilica or the throne make it unmistakable. A vineyard is called a vineyard unless the ridge is
on its horizon.
